History: auDA was established in 1999 as the not-for-profit policy authority and industry self-regulatory body for the .au domain space. The formation of auDA was the result of a consultative process involving industry stakeholders and the Australian Government. auDA's purpose is to administer a trusted .au for all Australians, and to champion an open, free, secure and global Internet. Pursuant to its purpose, auDA develops and implements domain name policy, licenses 2LD registry operations, accredits registrars, implements consumer safeguards, facilitates the auDRP, and represents .au at ICANN and other international fora.
auDA was first endorsed to operate the .au ccTLD by the Australian Government in December 2000 (and most recently in 2021), and is recognised by ICANN as the operator for .au under a Sponsorship Agreement signed in October 2001.
