Founding date: 1993

Registration Model: Registry/Registrar system

Number of domain names: 187000 as of June 2009.

History: The registry for .sk is operated by the company SK-NIC. In 1993, SK-NIC started operating the .sk domain. Since 2002, SK-NIC is providing services on a fee basis.

There is a trilateral model of legal relationships between (1) the registrant and the registrar, (2) the registrant and SK-NIC, and (3) between the registrar and SK-NIC.

The registrants and registrars operate through a web interface. The domain fee is payable a year in advance.

In 2006 SK-NIC signed a co-operation agreement with the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic, which is the state administration's central authority responsible for establishing the information society. The main goal of the agreement is to manage the administration of the .sk ccTLD in compliance with the interests of the Slovak Government and the internet community. The agreement suggests the foundation of a commission which would consist of seven members to discuss the rules and monitor their adherence. Each party to the agreement has two representatives; the three remaining seats belong to representatives of the Slovak internet community.

SK-NIC has to issue an operation report every six months. The agreement presumes the partnership of the ministry and the local internet community to determine rules for .sk domain registration. SK-NIC promised to completely revise the existing system of domain registration in Slovakia and to correct the potential shortages of the system. The agreement expects the creation of a tripartite partnership (ccTLD manager, community, government).
