1986-1997 several organizations were responsible for the .fi registry.
1997 there were many severe disputes regarding the ownership of domain names. The registry was operated by KPNQWest Finland (for profit) and soon it became obvious that there was a conflict between commercial interests and neutrality.
1997 by the request of the ministry of transport and communications FICORA took over the administrative functions of the registry and applied very strict rules for registrations.
2002 KPNQWest Finland went into bankruptcy and FICORA took over the technical functions of the registry as well.
2003 was implemented a new more liberal registration policy for companies (Domain Name Act) at the same time with a new fully automated registry system.
2005 Whois service and IDN's were implemented.
2005 First anycast service implemented.
2006 private persons got the same rights as companies had had since 2003.
