PANDI was formed by the Indonesian Internet community together with the government on September 1, 2006 to manage .id Domain Names.

On June 29, 2007, the government through the Ministry of Communication and Informatics of the Republic of Indonesia officially handed over the management of all Indonesian internet domains to PANDI, apart from go.id and mil.id which was set forth in the Minutes of Handover of .id Domain Management with number BA–343/DJAT/MKOMINFO /6/2007 from the Director General Aptel to PANDI.

PANDI is the Indonesia Internet Domain Name Registry appointed by the government based on the Decree of the Minister of Communication and Informatics of the Republic of Indonesia, No. 806 of 2014. In addition, PANDI was appointed by IANA and ICANN through the .id Domain Name delegation announced at https://www.iana.org/domains/root/db.

PANDI's role is to manage Indonesian Domain Names (.id) by following international Domain Name management provisions and laws and regulations in Indonesia. Based on Ministry of Communication and Informatics of the Republic of Indonesia Regulation No. 23 of 2013 concerning Domain Name Management, PANDI has the task of managing Registry Administration for Registrants and Registrants to present harmonization and ecosystem of .id Domain Name management.
