History: TWNIC is responsible for both .tw domain name registration and address space allocation in Taiwan. The establishment of TWNIC can be broken down into three major stages:

Stage 1: March 1994 to June 1996, Taiwan Network Information Center established as a 2-Year experimental program.

Stage 2: June 1996 to April 1998, TWNIC was administrated by the Computer Society of the ROC (CSROC).

Stage 3: TWNIC was officially registered as a corporation on 29 December 1999.

As a non-profit organization, TWNIC's primary functions and responsibilities are (1) to provide .tw domain name and IP/ASN registration and management, as well as directory and database access; (2) to coordinate and facilitate activities and cooperation between national and international Internet-related organizations; (3) to assist the industry in the promotion of nationwide Internet use, and coordinate the exchange and integration of Internet information services.
