History: The emphasis was on the development of technical systems, regulations and procedures. The registration activities themselves became more prominent as use of the Internet took off in the Netherlands and the number of registered domain names began to increase. This led to the creation of SIDN on 31 January 1996, by which time there were already 3,300 registered domain names. The prime movers behind the Foundation's creation were Boudewijn Nederkoorn, Managing Director of SURFnet, Ted Lindgreen, MD of NLnet and Piet Beertema of the CWI (Centre for Mathematics and Informatics). By the end of 1996, the number of registered .nl domain names had already increased to 9,215; a year later the figure had reached 10,000. Today, SIDN has more than 1,900 registrars and there are in excess of 4 million .nl domain names.
